Two of SA ‘s top  pro cyclists, Jeremy Maartens and David George, were hit by a taxi on Friday morning while putting the finishing touches to their preparations for this weekend’s SA road race championships.

They were training on part of the SA championship course near the Union Buildings in Pretoria when the incident took place at around 9am. The full extent of their injuries has not yet been confirmed, but it is known that both riders sustained severe lacerations and heavy bruising.

Both were taken to the Union hospital, and it is expected that Maartens may have to be kept in overnight to allow time to reduce the swelling caused by a massive haemotoma on his right hip.

“We believe that David will still be okay to ride in the SA road championship,” commented Barloworld-Valsir’s team principal, John Robertson.
