Sean Merredew, the KZN road cycling champion for the past three years in succession, is looking forward to the forthcoming Mr Price Tour Durban, set for Sunday, April 24.

“We don’t usually have a lot of cycling media coverage down here, so it’s very welcome when it comes together with a popular race like the Mr Price Tour Durban,” said Merredew.

“At least us local guys have a bit of advantage over the Gauteng riders because we know the route quite well and the climate obviously suits us,” he went on.

The Richards Bay based Merredew will join with team mates Brian and Steven McMaster, Richard Baxter, Ross Blount and David Imrie from Fuji bikes, to make up the Mr Price Fuji Falcons challenge at the Mr Price Tour Durban.

“As long as the Barloworld-Valsir team isn’t here (“they’re in a different league altogether!”) I feel we will be able to hang in with the rest of the Gauteng riders and that will be the plan,” Sean commented.

“I really have strong hopes for the kermesse, which will preceed the race on the Friday evening, as the shorter distance suits me better and I have done well in it over the last couple of years,” he continued.

“We are all guys with regular jobs and obviously can’t train for six hours a day, but we still get in up to two hours training a day and we think that we will be enough to give the Gautengers a bit of go,” Sean pointed out.

As to his own successes in the KZN championships for the past three years, Sean was modest, simply commenting, “I’ve been lucky enough to have been the best on the day in the past.”

But the Mr Price Tour Durban is obviously a race  which he relishes and Sean adds, “it’s raced over a super route and it’s always been a great race, so this is something I’m really looking forward to!”

Out of province riders have been warned to watch out for some really low flying Falcons on the route!
